Kanyon Sawyers-Roods featured in the 37th annual Bioneers conference
Kanyon Sayers-Roods, a 2025 Native American & Alaska Native Women LeadStrong alum who was recently featured as a cultural guide and speaker during a Bioneers-led East Bay tour. In this role, Kanyon shared Indigenous knowledge, song, and storytelling with participants, offering a grounded perspective on the connections between land, culture, and community.
As Chairwoman of the Indian Canyon Nation, Kanyon brings Indigenous knowledge, ceremony, and voice into spaces that have not always centered Native leadership. Recently featured in coverage of the Bioneers Conference 2026, she joined a community tour across the East Bay, sharing song, story, and perspective rooted in generations of tradition. During the gathering, she emphasized the importance of Indigenous representation, noting the significance of being included in conversations shaping environmental and community futures.
Her presence on the tour—spanning urban farms, school gardens, and local watersheds—embodied a powerful connection between land, culture, and community. Through practices like singing her “Grandmother Song,” Kanyon offered participants not only knowledge, but an invitation to engage with the land in a more respectful and reciprocal way.
Kanyon’s leadership reflects a broader movement to uplift Indigenous voices in environmental and community spaces. Events like Bioneers bring together leaders working at the intersection of climate, culture, and justice, with a shared goal of advancing solutions that are rooted in both innovation and ancestral knowledge.
As a LeaderSpring Center alum, Kanyon embodies values of cultural grounding, courage, and community-centered leadership. Her work reminds us that true sustainability is inseparable from Indigenous sovereignty and wisdom—and that honoring these traditions is essential to building a more just and connected future.
