President Trump issues travel ban on 12 countries, places restrictions on 7

Zahra Billoo, the Executive Director of CAIR‑Bay Area, is also a Class of 2017 San Francisco Fellow with the LeaderSpring Center. She voiced strong concerns over President Trump’s newly reinstated travel ban on 12 countries—primarily in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia—and restrictions on seven more, noting that despite existing vetting systems, the policy is "targeting countries based on political motivations".

Billoo warned of the ban’s broad implications: “people will not be able to see their relatives, they will not be able to travel to the US.” She highlighted the deep personal and emotional toll on immigrant families throughout the Bay Area.

Implemented on June 9, 2025, the policy applies a full ban to citizens from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen—with partial restrictions on Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. Legal experts and immigrant advocates in the Bay Area are already preparing to challenge it, citing racism and a lack of concrete security justification
